Sweet Fields
A playful food art installation on sensation pollution
Food Design Exhibit during the Venitian Carnival, 2018
Palazzo Michiel / Venice, Italy
The exhibition, themed VANITAS, was inspired by the wealth, luxury and abundance of the Dutch Golden Age still-life paintings.
What resulted was a pop-up exhibition that explored excess, vanity and the self-destructive nature of the contemporary food industry. Innovative creators and food designers worldwide were invited to explore these topics through their performances, installations, films or objects.
Sweet Fields existed as a mixed-media installation in several parts, visually blending fresh fruits and vegetables, refreshed daily, with their candy versions, colorful sweets which are iconic in Venice. The installation invited the viewers to consider: In an environment of excess, exaggeration and indulgence, what am I really feeling? What do I truly desire? Can I distinguish the life-giving produce from the sparkly sweets?
With ever-increasing options and ever-decreasing caliber, we find ourselves overwhelmed and under-sensing. How can we plod through this saturation of taste, color and form to find the elements of honest flavor, sincere nourishment, timeless aesthetics and lasting energy. An invitation to recollect our authentic youthful and carnal instincts and to retake our senses as our own.
Choose for yourself; todo el año es Carnival.
